Egyptian state television said that an officer in the National Security Service was killed during clashes that took place this evening between security forces and armed men in the Amiriya area in Cairo, adding that all militants were also killed during the clashes.

The Egyptian Ministry of Interior confirmed in a statement that it "took control of the situation and managed to storm the building which the militants took cover and liquidated them."

Earlier, sources told Al-Jazeera that the Egyptian security forces closed the entrances and exits of Al-Amiriya area with the continuation of the clashes, which started at five in the evening and the participation of police forces, then joined by anti-terrorist forces and officers from special operations.

The police warned the people of the area not to approach the windows in light of the continuing clashes with the gunmen, and a number of ambulances arrived at the scene of the clashes.

Sources from Al-Amiriya district also reported that electricity was cut off, and that major security reinforcements arrived in the area with the start of the clashes.
