Steeve Briois (FN), mayor of Hénin-Beaumont, and his assistant Bruno Bilde (G). - M.Libert / 20 Minutes

The RN mayor of Hénin-Beaumont (Pas-de-Calais), Steeve Briois, was very widely re-elected in the first round on Sunday, with 73.95% of the vote, welcoming a "plebiscite". The outgoing mayor, already elected in the first round in 2014 under the label of the National Front with 50.25%, clearly outdistanced the list led by the ecologist Marine Tondelier (18.22%).

"Plebiscite of an absolutely indisputable assessment"

This election constitutes "a plebiscite of an absolutely indisputable assessment", welcomed the mayor of this city of 27,000 inhabitants of the old mining basin considered as one of the windows of the RN. The president of the party, Marine Le Pen, is a member of the riding including Hénin-Beaumont.

"This city has too often been soiled by controversies [led by] people who have taken an election today," said the former MEP. His list will have 31 elected out of 35 in the future municipal council, he said.
