The work of the 2nd congress of the Union for the Republic, the ruling party, ended Sunday evening in Nouakchott. Two days to allow the UPR to renew instances of the party which has closed ranks behind President-in-Office Mohamed Ould Ghazouani.

This congress marks a new start for a party that former president Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz wanted to keep after the presidential election of June 21 last won by Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani. It is now around him that the UPR has just closed its ranks and closed the parenthesis of its predecessor .

The name of the former Mauritanian head of state was not even mentioned during the work of this second congress of the Union for the Republic. On the other hand, endless thunders of applause sounded each time the name of his successor was pronounced.

It was in this atmosphere that the delegates chose the new president of the party , Sidi Mohamed Ould Taleb Amar, current director general of Waters, was minister and permanent representative of Mauritania at the United Nations.

He will lead the party with five vice-presidents. Among them, Yahya Ould Ahmed el-Waghef, former Prime Minister at the time of the 2008 coup against former President Ould Cheikh Abdallahi.

Two days before the opening of the congress, Yahya Ould Ahmed el-Waghef's party joined the UPR. The UPR, whose post as 5th vice-president, returned to Khalil Ould Teyib, who launched last October the campaign against the return of former president Aziz at the head of the ruling party.
