Following its extraordinary summit in Ouagadougou, the ECOWAS, extended to Mauritania and Chad, announced Saturday, September 14, a 2020-2024 action plan of $ 1 billion for the fight against jihadism.

Meeting at Extraordinary Summit in Ouagadougou , the Economic Community of West African States has decided to " mobilize financial resources to the tune of $ 1 billion for the fight against terrorism, " said Nigerian President Mahamadou Issoufou.

The plan and its budget will be presented in December at the next ECOWAS summit, but the money that will be poured into a " common pot " will be used to " strengthen the operational capabilities of national armies and joint forces " like the G5 Sahel or the Multinational Joint Force of the Lake Chad Basin.

" For several years, our states have been subject to unprecedented terrorist attacks. To overcome terrorism in the Sahel, the operationalization of the strategy for development and security of the G5 Sahel countries is extremely imperative and urgent, "warned the president of Burkina Faso Roch Marc Christian Kaboré.

This summit dedicated to the fight against terrorism in the Sahel is taking place while " the number of reported attacks (incidents) related to Islamist groups in this region has doubled every year since 2016 to reach 465 in 2018, " more than one per day, says the US think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).
