, the visit of the head of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, scheduled for February 12, 2024, was postponed without a new date having been fixed, according to a source at the Senegalese presidency.

The head of ECOWAS was to meet President Macky Sall this Monday afternoon, while the situation is still very tense in Senegal, since the announcement of the postponement of the presidential election from February 25 to December 15.

Last week,

ECOWAS called on Senegal

to “

urgently restore the electoral calendar

”. And, since Friday, three young people have died, killed during demonstrations against this postponement.

Furthermore, the European Union electoral observation mission announces the return of its 32 long-term observers “

in view of the uncertainty of the electoral calendar

”. The mission also says it is concerned that the decision to postpone the presidential election could constitute “

a break with Senegal’s long tradition of democracy

 ”.
