According to RIA Novosti, Salvini said that Putin is one "of those people who will leave a mark on history."
He also said that he had discussed with the Russian president the Olympic Games, the economy and the "insane sanctions of Europe against Russia."
In May, Salvini announced the need to lift the sanctions imposed against Russia.
