Tunisian Foreign Minister Khamis Jahnawi, whose country will host the Arab summit on March 31, said Syria's "natural place" was "within the League of Arab States."

"Syria is an Arab country and its natural place is within the Arab League," he said during a news conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Tunis.

"As far as Syria is concerned, it is up to Arab foreign ministers to decide what they can do, considering that their decision to return to the Arab League is not a Tunisian national decision," he said.

Al-Jahnawi reiterated Tunisia's keenness to find a solution to the Syrian dispute and the Syrians agree to get out of their crisis.

For his part, Lavrov said he discussed the issue of Syria's return to the Arab League with officials in Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco.

On his Maghreb tour, Lavrov is due to meet with Tunisian President Béji Kayed Sibsi and Prime Minister Youssef al-Shahed.

It is noteworthy that Syria was suspended in the Arab League with the beginning of the Syrian conflict in 2011, and is still outside the university amid the continued division of Arab countries on the return to the Organization.

Former Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki announced in February 2012 the expulsion of the Syrian ambassador in Tunisia and the withdrawal of any recognition of the regime in Damascus, calling on President Bashar al-Assad to step down from power.

But the relationship between the two countries has known a kind of convergence in the last period, where the resumption of air traffic between Tunisia and Damascus in December, and also visited a union delegation of 29 personalities from the Tunisian General Union of Labor in early August last Damascus met with President Bashar al-Assad and leaders of General Federation of Syrian Trade Unions.

Observers believe that the decision to open Tunisia's embassy in Syria is a matter of time under the public statements of the Tunisian Foreign Minister and advisers in the presidency of the Republic of the existence of genuine diplomatic efforts by Tunisia to restore Damascus seat in the Arab League.
