Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has announced that he will donate most of his wealth during his lifetime.

He thus becomes the latest billionaire to commit to donating much of his vast fortune.

Bezos, with an estimated wealth of approximately 124.1 billion dollars according to Forbes magazine, made the announcement during an interview with his girlfriend Lauren Sanchez on CNN.

The billionaire did not specify how or to whom he will give the money, but he did say that the couple was developing the "capacity" to do so.

"The hard part is figuring out how to do it," Bezos said during the interview.

"It's not easy. Building Amazon wasn't easy. It took hard work and very smart teammates. And I'm finding, and Lauren is finding, that philanthropy is very similar. It's not easy. It's very hard."

Bezos had previously been criticized for not signing the Giving Pledge, the campaign launched by Bill Gates, Melinda French Gates and Warren Buffet to encourage billionaires to donate most of their wealth through philanthropy.

The billionaire resigned from his CEO position at Amazon last year to devote more time to philanthropy and other projects.

As part of his Bezos Earth Fund initiative, he has pledged $10 billion to fight climate change.

And according to The Chronicle of Philanthropy, he also gave $510.7 million to nonprofits last year.

On Saturday, Bezos and Sanchez also announced a $100 million prize for singer Dolly Parton, who has been lauded for her philanthropic work, which helped create Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine.

Bezos had given similar recognition to chef José Andrés and CNN commentator Van Jones last year.
