Samsung Electronics held a board meeting on the morning of the 27th and announced that it had decided to promote Lee Jae-yong as chairman.

The Samsung Electronics Board of Directors explained that the promotion was decided because it was urgent to strengthen responsible management, improve management stability, and make quick and bold decisions amid the deteriorating global external conditions.

Accordingly, Chairman Lee took on the title of chairman 10 years after he was promoted to vice president in 2012 and two years after his father, the late Chairman Kun-hee Lee, passed away in October 2020.

He is about nine years later than Chairman Lee Kun-hee, who took office at the age of 45 in December 1987.

Chairman Lee, 54, joined Samsung Electronics in 1991 after graduating from Kyungbok High School and the Department of Oriental History at Seoul National University.

After Chairman Lee Kun-hee collapsed from an acute myocardial infarction in May 2014, he took the lead in management and became a registered director of Samsung Electronics in October 2016.

However, he was imprisoned twice for being implicated in the National Nongdan case of the Park Geun-hye government.

Chairman Lee, who came to the fore with the official title of chairman, is expected to take an active role in strengthening Samsung's competitiveness and creating future growth engines amid the global economic downturn.

Samsung's corporate governance restructuring and the group's 'control tower revival' are also of interest.

Reinforcing corporate social responsibility and removing the dark image of the past due to fraudulent accounting and expedient succession is also considered as the task of Chairman Lee.
