The Council of Ministers has approved this Tuesday the distribution of 1,889 million euros from European funds to the different autonomous communities, Ceuta and Melilla for the rehabilitation of housing, as confirmed this morning by the

Minister of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda ,

Raquel Sánchez

,

at the press conference after the Council of Ministers.

In Spain, only about 30,000 rehabilitation works are carried out per year, and with this new plan they would triple by 2030.

Of these almost 1,900 million euros, 1,389 million will be allocated during this 2022 to finance the

rehabilitation and regeneration

of homes, neighborhoods and residential buildings.

The remaining half million will be used next year to build 20,000

social rental homes in energy efficient buildings

.

The objective?

Reduce non-renewable energy consumption in homes by 30%, promoting more sustainable alternatives.

The distribution of the funds has been made taking into account the number of households that each community has, according to data from the 2020 Continuous Household Survey of the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

Andalusia

leads the distribution of funds with 241 thousand for home renovation and 87 thousand for rent.

Catalonia

continues

in second position with 224 thousand to rehabilitate and 80 to rent, while

Madrid

is the third that benefits the most with 194 thousand euros for the renovation of homes and 70 thousand for future more sustainable rentals.

THE SECTOR RESPOND

At the press conference, the minister confirmed that this plan will help create 180,000 jobs for the self-employed and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

However, the sector does not see it so clearly.

"We fear that there will not be time to manage all the millions that Europe gives us

," says a surveyor from Madrid, who assures that for this reason the Community has created external management agencies.

In addition, this renovation plan aims to fight climate change and reduce the carbon footprint and energy consumption.

After the Council of Ministers, Sánchez also explained that the criteria were agreed together with the autonomous communities in the Sectorial Conference, according to Efe.

In the coming weeks, a new Conference will be convened to "address this transfer and gradually consolidate each of the communities."

"The scope of this aid program is enormous both for citizens and for the capacity to create jobs and in this determined fight against climate change", said the minister.
