The start of loading nuclear fuel at the three Barakah stations after the issuance of the operating license

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation has announced that its subsidiary Nawah Energy Company has started loading nuclear fuel packets at the three Barakah Nuclear Energy Plants in accordance with all local regulatory requirements and the highest international standards, after obtaining a license to operate the plant from the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation.

The start of fuel loading after the issuance of the operating license for the third station and its joining the first and second stations in the operational phase, is a new achievement that highlights the great and continuous progress in the process of developing the nuclear energy sector as a strategic source of abundant and environmentally friendly electricity in the United Arab Emirates, and a significant contribution to the ongoing transformation process. in the energy sector and to enhance its security.

On this occasion, Mohammed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, said: “With the start of loading nuclear fuel at the third Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant after obtaining the operating license, we look forward to the third plant joining the first and second stations in the production of reliable electricity in the coming months.” ".

Al Hammadi added: Through this achievement of the third station, we continue to provide a practical solution to the phenomenon of climate change, and to enhance efforts to reduce the carbon footprint on a large scale in the United Arab Emirates, along with supporting economic growth, and to contribute pivotally to achieving the goals of the strategic state initiative to climate neutrality by 2050.

Al Hammadi concluded by saying that the successive achievements in developing a multi-plant project for peaceful nuclear energy highlight the essential role of nuclear energy in securing and sustaining energy for countries committed to achieving sustainable long-term development.

The issuance of the license to operate the third plant in Barakah confirms that the plant, work teams, programs, policies and procedures are in compliance with the exact standards of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation, and that all reviews by the International Atomic Energy Agency and the World Association of Nuclear Operators have been successfully completed, as FANR has completed 120 inspections and reviews Minutes for the plant, while the World Association of Nuclear Operators completed a pre-commencement review before the operating license for the third plant was issued.

With this achievement, three stations in Barakah have entered the operational phase in the past three years, after benefiting from the acquired knowledge and the expertise and experience of the operating teams.

After the nuclear fuel loading is completed, the operating team will proceed with preparations for the start of operation of the plant during the current year, so that the third plant will produce the first megawatt of reliable and environmentally friendly electricity.

For more than a decade, the Corporation has implemented an advanced training and qualification program to ensure the development of the capabilities of certified nuclear plant operators and engineers and enable them to operate three nuclear power plants simultaneously and safely.

Ali Al Hammadi, CEO of Nawah Energy Company, an affiliate of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation responsible for operating and maintaining the Barakah plants, said that obtaining a license to operate the third plant in Barakah comes within the framework of more than 520 careful reviews from the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation, 120 of which are for the third plant. These reviews covered all processes to ensure operation in accordance with local regulatory requirements.

The completion of all these reviews confirms the distinguished operational expertise of our specialized team, which consists of qualified Emirati competencies and international expertise, working together and achieving great progress represented in the start of the operational phase of a new plant in Barakah.

We appreciate these teams' dedication to achieving the highest standards of performance and operational excellence.

When operating commercially in the coming months, the third station in Barakah will add 1,400 megawatts of carbon-free electricity to the UAE's electricity grid, similar to the first and second stations, which will enhance the country's efforts to achieve its goals of reaching climate neutrality by 2050.

Barakah plants became the first peaceful multi-station nuclear energy project in operation in the Arab world, and it is one of the most important pillars of sustainable development in the UAE, and provides rewarding jobs in addition to supporting the growth of new industrial sectors.

The Barakah plants also provide significant environmental benefits to the country now and for the next sixty years and beyond, by accelerating the reduction of the carbon footprint of the energy sector. The four plants, when commercially operated annually, will reduce 22.4 million tons of carbon emissions, the main cause of climate change.

The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in the Al Dhafra region in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is one of the largest nuclear power plants in the world, and includes four reactors of advanced design APR-1400.

The fourth station has reached the final stage of construction operations.
