Waheed Mubarak Sayyar is Bahrain's new ambassador to Syria.

He is the first to hold this post for ten years.

After the start of the Syrian conflict in 2011, many countries had indeed

severed their diplomatic relations

with the regime of Bashar al-Assad to protest against the bloody repression of its population.

But in recent months, things have changed.

Several Gulf countries have decided to renew ties.

First, Oman last year, which reopened its embassy in Damascus.

Rebuilding economic ties

In

November

, the United Arab Emirates, which also

reopened

its diplomatic representation in Syria at the end of 2018, sent its foreign minister to Damascus to meet with Bashar al-Assad.

The Emirates are also campaigning for Syria's reintegration into the Arab League.

These countries therefore wish to re-establish diplomatic but also economic ties with Syria.

Ten years after the start of the war, the regime is still holding, it has even been strengthened thanks to the help of its Iranian and Russian allies.

His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa today issued Royal Decree (124) of 2021, appointing Waheed Mubarak Sayyar as the kingdom's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to #Syria.
