On Monday morning, Brazilian time, the 24-hour vigil began for the football legend, who died on Thursday at the age of 82.

The open coffin stands in the center circle of the football stadium in Santos, Vila Belmiro, where Pelé celebrated many triumphs during his career.

Pelé's family was present and son Edinho was one of the people who carried the coffin in, reports the Daily Mail.

Thousands of supporters queued to the arena to honor and say a final farewell to the icon, who died in a São Paulo hospital after a long battle with cancer.

Infantino's play

Among the first to honor Pelé were FIFA president Gianni Infantino and South American football president Alejandro Dominguez.

- We will ask all countries in the world to rename an arena in their country after Pelé, so that children know his importance, says Infantino outside the arena.

On Tuesday, the casket will be taken in procession through the streets of Santos, passing by the home of Pelé's 100-year-old mother.

Then Pelé will be buried in a special mausoleum in front of the family, at the Necrópole Ecumênica cemetery in Santos.
