Moscow, Russia

Relatives said goodbye to Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny at an open coffin - two weeks after his death in a Siberian prison camp.

Navalny's team showed the images in a live stream on YouTube.

Outside the church on the outskirts of Moscow, a kilometer-long line of people waiting to say goodbye to Navalny had formed.

Many people clapped and shouted Navalny's name as his coffin was carried out of the church after the funeral service - on the way to the funeral at the Borrisovskoye cemetery.

»The security authorities have set up bars behind me here and are trying to guide the crowds in targeted rows to the cemetery.

People keep shouting “Let’s get through, let’s get through!”

And demand freedom and even shout slogans against Putin and also against the war here.

“No to war!”

While some live broadcasts from Western TV channels and news agencies were apparently technically blocked, Navalny's team managed to continue streaming online.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov had previously warned against unauthorized protests, and security measures around the church grounds were correspondingly tight.

Thousands of Navalny supporters were not deterred by this:

Kamilla, participant:

“Well, maybe I feel the pressure, but when there are so many people here - it's okay.

It's not so scary when we're together."

Anonymous, participant:

»It's just important for many of us to see people who agree that what happened is terrible.

And that there are many of us.

That's what it's about."

Immediately after Navalny's death became known, supporters were arrested at mourning gatherings.

At the cemetery in Moscow, his supporters showed courage: even after Navalny's funeral, they continued to chant chants against the Kremlin ruler.

»We haven't seen such crowds in Moscow for years.

And it is also a signal to the Kremlin before the so-called presidential elections in two weeks here in Russia.

Those who express themselves critically about Putin have shown themselves on the street today and do not want to remain silent.
