A jersey worn by basketball legend Michael Jordan to win his last title with the Chicago Bulls has fetched a record tens of millions at auction.

As the US auction house Sotheby's announced on Thursday, the jersey that the 59-year-old wore during his "last dance" in the 1998 finals of the North American professional league NBA against the Utah Jazz cost 10.1 million US dollars changed hands.

It is only the second jersey from Jordan's "Last Dance" to have been sold at auction.

The shirt with the iconic number 23 achieved the highest price ever paid for a sports jersey worn in a game.

The final sum was twice as high as previously assumed by Sotheby's.

There were 20 offers in total.

The auction house did not say who the new owner is.

The Jordan shirt surpassed the amount paid last May for a shirt worn by Argentinian soccer legend Diego Maradona in the 1986 World Cup quarter-finals against England - the game in which Maradona scored an irregular goal with the so-called " Hand of God” scored.

The previous record for a basketball jersey worn in-game was $3.7 million for a jersey worn by the late Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant, according to Sotheby's.
