It took Manchester United a while to wake up against Southampton, and it was the home side who were the hottest initially.

But after 20 minutes of play, United got going and created four great chances to break the deadlock, in the same situation.

In the space of seconds, Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu and his defenders had saved four saves, with Christian Eriksen having the best position.

Southampton also had the good chances to make it 1-0.

After a corner, Armel Bella-Kotchap should have received the ball a few meters from the goal, but the finish went high when the ball came a little too far at the end.

In the second half the goal would come for United when a Portuguese duo stepped forward.

Diogo Dalot sent the ball into the center with a low and rock-hard cross, a ball that reached compatriot Bruno Fernandes who volleyed in at the left post.

Southampton pressed hard in the final minutes and came close to getting an equalizer in extra time.

But the match ended 1-0, and United took their second straight victory.

Anthony Elanga played from the start and was replaced in the 80th minute.
