The first individual gold at the World Short Course Championships in Abu Dhabi will have to wait for Sarah Sjöström.

She chased the victory feverishly in the final of the 50 meter butterfly, but finished second in the time of 24.51.

Ranomi Kromowidjojo took gold in 24.44 and Claire Curzan, USA, was third.

- It was a tough race against Sarah.

I am very happy with the race, says the winner afterwards.

The medal is Sjöström's third in Abu Dhabi.

She took gold in the team race and took silver in the 100 meters freestyle yesterday.

The result means that Therese Alshammar's world record, from 2009 at 24.38, stands.
