But in the end she was able to catch up, pass, and secure first place and a place in the final.
Sarah Sjöström swam 24, 94 - three hundredths faster than runner-up Yufei Zhang, China.
The final on Sunday is expected to be a duel between the Swede and the Dutch star Ranomi Kromowidjojo who swam her semifinal at an impressive 24.61.
Sara Junevik did not make it to the final.
She finished in seventh place in her semifinal in the time of 25.68.
