One of the country's best drivers is now forced to stop using the speedway.

Many were surprised when the 31-year-old from Avesta made a comeback after the first severe crash in Poland just over two years ago.

Linus Sundström sustained life-threatening injuries but got up and made a new investment in Västervik.

The joy, however, was short-lived.

During a league match in Denmark in May, Sundström broke his back, he lost control of the motorcycle and hit the hill with violent force on a track in poor condition.

- The doctors said that I would buy a ticket that was not paralyzed in the crash, he tells SVT Sport that the match should never have been run.

Struggle to get the muscles back

It has been a long and painful rehabilitation back to a normal life for the Västervik driver.

After an emergency operation where the thoracic spine was operated on, it has been a struggle to get the muscles in the body back at all.

In addition, the injuries to the femur, shoulder and arm have been constantly reminded.

SVT Sport met the 31-year-old in June when he was back with his teammates in the depot and was then highly unsure if there would be a new comeback.

- I have swum, walked with ski poles on slopes and tried to be in motion.

It's starting to feel okay, but as soon as I lift something it hurts, he explains and continues:

- I have previously said that an injury would not put an end to my career.

Now it does not end the way I want but I am not bitter but grateful for everything I have been through during my career.

Opens for continuation in speedway

Sundström further says that he received great support from the family during the rehabilitation.

That no one is surprised by the decision that emerged during the autumn.

When it comes to future plans, Linus intends to feel ahead.

- I do not rule out that there will be a continuation within the speedway.

Several have heard of it and it is flattering.

But we'll see what happens to everything.

It's time to write a new chapter in the book.
