After two stages designed for punchers, it's time for sprinters.

Tim Merlier was faithful to the meeting by winning after a massive sprint in the streets of Pontivy on Monday June 28 to win the third stage of the Tour de France 2021. He was taken to the sprint by his teammate Mathieu Van Der Poel, winner the day before.

The stage was again marked by falls: Primoz Roglic fell 10 km from the finish and lost time in the general classification.

Earlier, Geraint Thomas, the Welsh leader of Ineos-Grenadiers, had also fallen. The former Tour winner took a long time to start again, holding his collarbone, but ended up with the field.

A fall that had forced Roglic's teammate Robert Gesink to retire.
