On May 23, Soviet and Russian chess player Anatoly Karpov turns 70. The 12th world champion received his title in 1975 when Robert Fischer refused to defend his title. Karpov twice defended the chess crown in meetings with Viktor Korchnoi, after which the era of his confrontation with Garry Kasparov began. After the split in the chess community, Karpov became the FIDE world champion three more times.
