The Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen has signed the Swiss Gerardo Seoane as head coach for the coming season.

The 42-year-old comes from the Swiss champions Young Boys Bern, receives a three-year contract and will replace coach Hannes Wolf at the “Werkself” from the summer.

Bayer confirmed this on Wednesday.

"With Gerardo Seoane we want to attack again in the coming season," said Bayer Sports Director Simon Rolfes.

The new coach coined an "attractive and offensive" game idea.

“We have been defining ourselves here for a long time by an aggressive, dominant and technically demanding style.

And we want to develop this way of playing together with Gerardo Seoane in the coming years and be successful with it. "

According to media reports, Eintracht Frankfurt was also interested in the Swiss.

Seoane followed Adi Hütter in Bern in 2018, who then switched to Eintracht and will be working at Borussia Mönchengladbach in the coming season.

Interest was also rumored from other clubs.

According to media reports, Bayer is making use of an exit clause in Seoane's contract and is therefore paying a transfer fee of around one million euros.

Seoane had led Bern to the championship title in all three consecutive seasons since he took office in 2018, and last year he also won the Swiss Cup with the Young Boys.

At the moment, with one matchday before the end of the season, Bern is leader of the table with 28 points ahead.

No stranger to Leverkusen

Seoane is no stranger to Leverkusen. In the second round of the Europa League, the Young Boys surprisingly prevailed in February with two wins against Bayer Leverkusen - with a 4: 3 in Bern and a 2: 0 in Leverkusen. These defeats were also a reason for the end of the tenure of coach Peter Bosz. Wolf then took over as an interim solution and got twelve points from seven games. Bayer is sure to qualify for the Europa League even before the last match day.

Sports director Rudi Völler certified Wolf an effective and goal-oriented work. “We were hit. Hannes breathed new life into the team with his coaching team. Our idea worked. He will now return to the DFB as agreed. But I am convinced that we will see Hannes Wolf again soon at a professional club, ”said Völler.
