As expected, the players in the world elite are registered for the tournament which starts on February 8.

This includes Roger Federer, who as recently as mid-December was unsure about his participation.

- Already in October, I had hoped to be 100 percent back.

But I'm not there yet, it will be a battle against the clock with the Australian Open, Federer said then.

The world number five has not played a tennis match since February, when he underwent surgery for his knee injury which he suffered the same month.

Another operation in June put an end to competitions for the rest of 2020.

Williams wants to break records

Last year's winners of the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem, Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas are some of the other men's players entered for the tournament.

On the women's side, superstar Serena Williams will line up.

A victory in Melbourne would mean that she touches Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slam titles.

She is challenged by Simona Halep, Naomi Osaka, Sofia Kenin, Elina Svitolina and Karolina Pliskova, among others.

The Australian Open takes place February 8-21.

The men's qualifiers for the tournament will be decided on January 10-13 in Doha, Qatar, so that players can go to Melbourne and sit in a 14-day mandatory quarantine.

The WTA tour has not announced how the ladies' qualifiers will be decided, but a similar approach is likely.
