The Italian tennis professional Jannik Sinner has won his first title at a Grand Slam tournament. The 22-year-old beat Russian Daniil Medvedev 3:6, 3:6, 6:4, 6:4, 6:3 in the final of the Australian Open. Sinner had previously dominated the tournament and eliminated defending champion Novak Djokovic from Serbia in the semifinals.

Sinner is the first Italian Grand Slam winner in men's singles in 48 years and the third ever. For Medvedev, however, it is already the third defeat in the final in Melbourne; he also had to admit defeat in 2021 and 2022. Two years ago he also lost a 2-0 set lead against Rafael Nadal.

Despite his success, Sinner remains number four in the world rankings for the time being. It was the first men's final on the Yarra River since 2005 that took place without the participation of Djokovic, Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal. The German number one Alexander Zverev failed in the semi-finals of the first major tournament of the year in a five-set thriller against Medvedev.
