After years of protests, the Cleveland Indians from Major League Baseball part with their racist name.

The team confirmed this step on Monday after the "New York Times" and the "Washington Post" had previously reported.

The Ohio baseball team has been called the Cleveland Indians since 1915.

A new name and the schedule have not yet been set.

"Because this is so important, we will not rush these decisions," said a letter to the fans of team owner Paul Dolan.

Until there is a new name, the team will continue to be called Cleveland Indians.

After the Washington Football Team, which split from its old name Redskins (Redskins) in the summer, the baseball players are the second team from one of the major US leagues to give in to the pressure.

"What's happening?

This is not good news, even for 'Indians', ”commented the incumbent US President Donald Trump on Twitter.

This is where the “cancel culture” appears.

Cleveland had already separated from its mascot, an Indian caricature, last year.

When the footballers from the capital announced the decision to part with the nickname Redskins in July, the Indians for their part announced an in-depth study of their own name.

Dolan wrote that he associates many of the past successes with the name "Indians", but "I really believe that Cleveland is the most important part of our team name".

Criticism of the names - including that of the Kansas City Chiefs from the NFL or the Chicago Blackhawks from the NHL - has been around for years.

After the death of the African-American George Floyd in May and the subsequent protests against racism in the USA, the pressure on these teams also increased.

The Chiefs and Blackhakws are not aware of any plans to change their team names.
