On Monday, the International Olympic Committee announced that breaking, also called breakdance, will be a new branch of the Olympics in Paris in 2024. A news item The Swedish Dance Sports Association received with open arms.

- Olympics - it can not get bigger.

We are super happy and super-tagged, says Oskar Johansson Quartieri, sports developer at the association.

Johansson Quartieri describes the dance as easily accessible, as a space for the broad masses to enter the Olympic scene.

Not least because only one dance space is needed.

- It is a world dance that many young people do, from different cultures and backgrounds.

No special equipment is needed, he says.

"A world dance"

But that a world-wide dance belongs on an Olympic stage has not been a matter of course.

According to Tobias "Marre" Marin, who has been active in breaking since 1994, it does not really go hand in hand with the image he himself has had of the dance.

- But I have never liked being on stage.

For me, it has been more about travel, training and the social part.

But for lack of space in music videos and in music television, where breaking was big in the past, he has changed his mind.

- It needs to be visible.

I think this will make breaking grow a lot.

A matter of taste

Breaking stands with one leg in sports and with the other in culture.

And that it will become an assessment sport during the Olympics, "Marre" sees potentially as problematic.

- It is an art form and who can judge what is good?

It's a matter of taste.

More competitions

The only recurring competition in breaking in Sweden until now has been the Swedish Championships, which have been arranged once a year.

But Johansson Quartieri believes that the IOC's message can give both the sport a boost, something they want to match the competition offer after.

- The idea is that there should be competitions scattered in the country so that breakers from all parts can compete.

There will simply be more competitions.

There are four years left, what do Sweden's chances look like?

- It's pretty early to say.

There may be future names with huge potential in two years.

- To the dancers I want to say, train because now we drive!
