Greek police are waiting for the Manchester United star Maguire to apologize

The lawyer for the two Greek policemen announced that his clients "are awaiting apologies" from the captain of Manchester United's football team, Harry Maguire, who has been sentenced to 21 months in prison and 10 days suspended for the assault on them. Maguire was found guilty of all the charges against him: "assault on representatives of the state", "bodily harm", "verbal insults" and "attempted bribery".

Last Thursday, Maguire was arrested with his brother and a friend while they were on vacation on the Greek island of Mykonos, in connection with a quarrel with tourists in a nightclub, followed by an altercation with plainclothes policemen, who spent two nights in custody.

"They told me that they are still waiting for apologies, and they have not received them yet," Ioannis Paradis told the BBC, adding that under Greek law, apologies "can have an effect" on the appeal.

"I find it very shocking and unsportsmanlike. It takes a sporting spirit when we do something wrong. We apologize or at least say sorry for what happened to the other person." Maguire, who was absent from the court session after leaving Greek territory following the verdict, issued a statement confirming that he would appeal. "I remain strong and confident of our innocence in this case - I, my family and my friends, we are the victims in this case," he said in his statement.
