The Minister of Youth and Sports, Ashraf Sobhy, revealed that the Port Said stadium will be completely demolished and the construction of a new sports city that includes the new Port Said stadium and another new stadium.

The Egyptian newspaper Al-Shorouk quoted statements by Ashraf Sobhy, in which he said: “The Port Said stadium was among the stadiums chosen for the African Cup of Nations, but we found all its walls in danger of falling.”

The Minister of Youth and Sports added: "We did not take a single opinion, but formed a committee of professors from Cairo University, Port Said and the Engineering Authority, and it was agreed to demolish the stadium and develop the entire area into a multi-purpose stadium."

He continued: "The region includes the Port Said Club, the Youth Stadium, the stadium and the football stadium. We are implementing instructions to develop the area. The restoration is not the target. The new Port Said stadium will be larger in capacity than another stadium that will also be established in the new sports city in the governorate."
The decision to demolish the stadium comes after the Port Said massacre in the Al-Masry and Al-Ahly match in 2012 that resulted in the death of 72 Al-Ahmar fans, which contributed to the absence of any match on this stadium since this incident.
