On Wednesday, the International Olympic Committee, the IOC, said they and the Japanese government agreed to advance the championship for a year. Sarah Sjöström and the other athletes are now looking forward to an Olympics 2021 instead.

- I was able to swim the Olympics in July, but I will swim the Olympics next July instead simply. You have to try to find good planning now that works, she tells SVT Sport.

"Have been prepared for it"

Even before this summer's Soccer European Championship has been postponed to the summer of 2021. That the Olympics are now moved forward was expected.

- It doesn't come as a surprise, of course. After all, we have been a little prepared for this to happen, as there are several nations who say that they will not stand if the Olympics goes as planned in July, says Sjöström.

Sjöström and her Swedish swimming colleagues have been able to train as usual, but in many other countries swimming pools and sports arenas are closed and athletes are without training opportunities. That is why Sjöström believes it is a good decision to postpone the championship.

- It is obviously a fair decision, since there are so many people who are quarantined now and who cannot go to their training arenas. Many sports have very complicated qualification rules, where you have to go to several countries and qualify for different competitions to advance, there is no time for now when many competitions have been canceled, she says.

"I can reload"

Now it is important to change the plan and make sure it is at its best in 2021.

- I will be really excited to compete next year too. If there is something elite athletes are pros on then it is recharge. So I can reload, I've done it many times before, says Sjöström.
