China News Service, March 24th. On the evening of the 23rd, the Chinese Fencing Association published an obituary on its official website. The famous Chinese fencing coach Wen Guogang died of illness in Shanghai on the evening of the 23rd at the age of 80.

Wen Guogang was China's first generation of fencing coaches. During his coaching period, he trained China's first women's fencing Olympic champion Luan Jujie and contributed to the development of China's fencing sport.

Wen Guogang from Hengyang, Hunan, as a former fencer, won the men's foil national championship in the second National Games in 1965. After retiring, he became the coach of the Jiangsu Fencing Team in 1975, and led the team to win 3 gold medals at the 3rd National Games of the same year.

In addition to Luan Jujie, while serving as the head coach of the national fencing team, Wen Guogang also trained the women ’s foil runner-up Wang Huifeng of the Barcelona Olympics, and Zhu Qingyuan, Li Huahua, Wu Qiuhua, Chu Shisheng and other outstanding athletes.

Wen Guogang has also held important positions such as vice chairman of the Chinese Fencing Association, director of the coaching committee of the Chinese Fencing Association, and member of the Chinese Olympic Committee. In the obituary, the Chinese Fencing Association mourned his death. (Finish)
