The quarter-finals of the European Cup and the European Rugby Challenge, scheduled for the weekend of April 3, 4 and 5, have been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, the organizers announced on Monday.

"Due to growing public health concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, it was decided today (Monday) during a conference call to postpone these eight games and suspend the season for European tournaments », It is indicated in a press release from the EPCR (European Professional Club Rugby).

Before the European Cup, the Top 14 or the Pro 14 had already announced postponements of matches in a context of almost total cessation of professional sport in Europe. The four meetings Exeter - Northampton, Clermont - Racing 92, Leinster - Saracens, all three initially scheduled for April 4, and Toulouse - Ulster, scheduled for April 5, are therefore postponed to an unknown date.

A meeting scheduled for Wednesday

These four games, and the four quarters of the European Challenge, will have to find a new place in a calendar already overloaded in normal times. "The EPCR remains determined to try to find a solution, in consultation with the leagues and federations concerned, which will allow it to complete the season (...) at an appropriate period compatible with the preventive measures taken," added l 'instance.

So opens a period of uncertainty and discussion between national and international rugby authorities. In France, the office of the National League will meet initially Tuesday, before presenting to the presidents of the thirty clubs of Top 14 and Pro D2, Wednesday during a telephone meeting, the possible scenarios at this stage.
