It seems inevitable. The coronavirus is spreading across Europe, causing in its wake an epidemic of closed doors in the stadiums of the continent. Last poster hit, the knockout round of the Champions League return between Bayern Munich and Chelsea. The Bavarian club, 3-0 winner on the way to London, complies with the rule laid down by the regional authorities of Bavaria, which on Tuesday banned all gatherings of more than 1000 people until April 19.

"The only people admitted to the stadium will be those whose work is necessary for the good performance of the match [...] but the television broadcast is guaranteed", specifies the club. Tickets already sold will be refunded.

This announcement comes as no surprise, and Germany is now preparing to experience a period of football in empty stadiums. Dortmund-Schalke will take place behind closed doors on Saturday, as will the Germany-Italy preparation match for Euro-2020 on March 31 in Nuremberg, also in Bavaria.
