Carlos Yulo did take a bronze at the World Cup last year, but it came as a surprise when the 19-year-old from the Philippines finally stood at the top of the podium in free standing before Artem Dolgopyat of Israel and Chinese Xiao Ruoteng.

The men's rings also offered a historic gold medalist and unusually emotional scenes. All three medalists celebrated as if they had taken the World Cup gold. Of course, it is not commonplace that the nationalities on a World Cup stand are Turkey, Italy and France. Ibrahim Colak tore off a smile in the middle of his program and perhaps already felt that it would go the way.

The audience's highest cheer probably attracted the German Nick Klessing when he jumped off the rings with a triple-volt. That didn't help him in the end. The German ended last.
