THE THEME OF THE DAY

Coalition leaders advise on dimensions

What happens to Hans-Georg Maaßen? The party leaders of the Grand Coalition have come together for a possibly decisive summit meeting on the future of the controversial constitutional protection president. Chancellor Angela Merkel, CSU leader and Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer and the SPD chairman Andrea Nahles try to find a solution.

The SPD demands a replacement of Maaßens, who was criticized because of his comments on the events in Chemnitz and because of contacts with the AfD. Seehofer, however, was previously his head of agency.

Not only for Maaßen, but also for Seehofer the situation is tricky: If the chief of the protection of the constitution should be deposed, this could also result in a resignation of the interior minister. That is why there may have been a transfer of Maaßens to another post - Seehofer could use it to protect his face, and a breakout of the SPD from the coalition would be prevented.

OPINION

Most talked about comments, interviews, essays

How Ronald Pofalla could save the coalition exit: The railway manager wants to bring the coal commission to an agreement. But his push for a withdrawal from coal between 2035 and 2038 is criticized by many members. Wrong - because he could be a fair compromise. A comment by Gerald Traufetter.

Learning from the parallel world of Austria: From a political point of view, our neighboring country is not a model - with one exception: an initiative for more women's rights. This is worthy of imitation, because air is also up in Germany, says our columnist Margarete Stokowski.
