  • Drugs, bullying and sexual abuse... The children of The Goonies turn 50

There are several generations who grew up watching The Goonies every Christmas. A film that, despite not being of this Christmas theme, is always a great bet for the family movie afternoons that these dates propitiate in all homes.

And while the gang of friends that gave the film its title have been tracked from time to time, not everyone knows the tragic fate of John Matuszak, the actor in charge of bringing Sloth to life behind his characteristic mask. The aforementioned character is, at the beginning of the adventure, on the enemy side of the Goonies, so the plot twist that brings him closer to the protagonist group made him one of the most beloved in the film.

The truth is that Matuszak was really an athlete, specifically a former American football player, who stood out due to his two meters tall and almost 130 kilos of weight. A perfect size to play the already famous giant, but that did not help his health, as he died at the age of 38 due to bronchopneumonia and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy that were aggravated by the consumption of cocaine and propoxyphene, the latter being an opioid that had been prescribed to him.

A premature death that cut short his life and put an end to the discreet career that his role as Sloth had begun in the world of cinema, since after being part of the famous blockbuster he went on to star in two films and make several cameos in titles of the time. The last film he worked on, Millionaires in the Sewer, was released a year after his passing.
