The mallard that nested in a pot on Rådhustorget in Umeå has given birth. Seven ducks hatched and to get them to a safer place, sausage vendor Helmer Holm moved the duck mother and the newly hatched ducks. He has provided the mother duck with food and water throughout the breeding season.

On Friday, many Umeå residents gathered to watch the mallard's eggs hatch. With the help of other visitors, the duck and cubs were moved to the river.

"Better off by the river"

The County Administrative Board had no comments on the ducks being moved.

"I think the spirit is much better off being by the river than in the middle of town where there are so many people," says conservationist Marlene Olsson and continues:

"If the spirit is safe, that's good," she says.
