After more than five weeks of war, a thousand dead and more than a million displaced and refugees, the week-long truce between the military and paramilitaries at war for power in Sudan officially came into effect on Monday, May 22.

It was not immediately clear whether the ceasefire that was supposed to allow the passage of civilians and humanitarian aid was actually being implemented on the ground because the fighting, mainly in Khartoum and Darfur (west), usually weakens at night.

Throughout the day, the UN reported "fighting and troop movements".
