Jokkmokk municipality has three of the four projects where Vattenfall wants to expand hydropower. It is Porjus, Harsprånget and Messaure power stations in the Lule River where feasibility studies for expansion are now being initiated.

In Porjus and Harsprånget, operations in the new plants can start as early as 2026. In Messaure 2031.

Municipal commissioner Roland Boman (Future in Jokkmokk) is in favour of an expansion of hydropower if, as planned, it takes place in existing facilities.

"We are positive to the expansion, but hope that they will work more with the environment and sustainability after the Lule River, which they have not done for 50 years," he says.

Among other things, he points to many dry river channels.

"We have several places along the river where it erodes, where it is not possible to travel. That needs to be looked at.
