According to the forecast, investments in housing, premises and facilities in Gothenburg will decrease by 14 per cent in 2023. Among housing projects, this decreased most, 26 per cent.

According to Anna Lönn Lundbäck, regional manager at Byggföretagen, the decrease in investments is mainly due to interest rate hikes.

"Households are facing increasingly strained finances, but it is also becoming tougher for construction companies to be able to make investments," she says.

Sinking throughout Västra Götaland

The new forecast thus indicates that fewer and fewer construction projects will be started and the result is likely to be that an increasing housing shortage awaits. At the same time, the city is growing rapidly. Gothenburg already has a so-called housing debt, where the need for housing is greater than the number of construction starts.

Investments are not only decreasing in Gothenburg. 2023 promises to be a tough year for the construction market throughout Västra Götaland.

"In Skaraborg and in Sjuhärad, the figures are very similar to what is in Gothenburg and also the country as a whole," says Anna Lönn Lundbäck.
