Despite all efforts to work together, North America is a region with unequal partners.

The United States and Canada are among the most developed countries in the world and tend to have frictionless relations.

Mexico, on the other hand, is an emerging country whose relationship with the USA in particular is repeatedly burdened by problems with illegal migration and drug smuggling, as well as disputes over economic and trade issues.

The fact that it was possible to deal with this in a friendly atmosphere at the summit meeting of the three heads of state and government in Mexico City is mainly due to the fact that Trump is no longer in the White House.

Defying China together

Biden issued a guiding principle that could bring the three countries even closer together economically in the future: protection against "arbitrary" disruptions to the supply chains, i.e. possible disruptions from China.

This is a goal that is now often mentioned in Europe as well, as is the desire to limit or at least better manage immigration.

The EU would also have to rely more on regional cooperation, in this case primarily with (North) Africa.

After all, German government representatives are currently traveling frequently to the neighboring continent, which has been neglected in Berlin for far too long.

You can change a lot politically, but not the geography.
