The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, has called for the suspension of Russia's membership in the UN Security Council, claiming that it violates international law.

Michel added, during an interview with the "RTVI" channel, which was reported by the Russian Novosti agency yesterday, that the violation of international law by a permanent member of the Security Council, such as Russia, is an indication of a major defect in its provisions.

Michel made it clear that the establishment of a mechanism to suspend Russia's membership in the Security Council is necessary, noting that he does not demand Russia's complete exclusion from the council, but at least the suspension of its membership at this stage.

At the same time, the President of the European Council admitted that this cannot be done at the present time, because it would plunge the concept of security in the United Nations into the abyss, noting that the United Nations concept of security is severely floundering, and faces many difficulties in resolving major international crises.

It is noteworthy that Russia withdrew from the European Convention on Human Rights on September 16, 2022, and the Commission suspended the consideration of all complaints against Russia, after receiving news of its withdrawal from the European Council.

It is noteworthy that after the start of the Russian war in Ukraine, European countries began to demand Russia's exclusion from the UN Security Council.

At the same time, Russia's participation in the Security Council as a permanent member stipulated in Article 23 of the Charter of the organization, which requires an amendment to the Charter, the approval of which requires the signature of all permanent members of the Security Council, and as a permanent member, Russia has the right to use the right of "veto". to invalidate the decision.
