United Nations: 15 million Syrians are now in need of humanitarian aid

The Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Faisal Al-Miqdad, discussed with the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to Syria, Geir Pedersen, today, Wednesday, the latest developments related to the situation in Syria and the region.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), this came during Minister Mekdad's meeting today with the envoy Pedersen and his accompanying delegation, noting that the envoy Pedersen presented the results of his tours and meetings during the last period, and the efforts he is making within the framework of the mandate entrusted to him.

In turn, Minister Mekdad explained the main challenges facing Syria, represented in particular by the negative effects left by terrorism and unilateral coercive measures on the Syrian economy and the lives of Syrians, as well as the continued illegal American and Turkish presence on Syrian territory in flagrant violation of Syrian sovereignty and international law.

Pedersen stressed that his visit to Damascus is a continuation of the deep and continuous dialogue with the Syrian government, noting that there are about 15 million Syrians in need of humanitarian aid, and this is unacceptable.

He pointed out that "the continuation of the situation as it is in Syria is a matter that does not serve anyone's interest," stressing the need to discuss all these matters and the affairs of the displaced inside Syria and the refugees.

The Syrian newspaper "Al-Watan" quoted Pedersen as saying after his meeting with Minister Al-Miqdad, "I submitted a report to the UN Security Council last Tuesday about the reality on the Syrian ground and made a presentation about the possibilities of military escalation in northern Syria, and we asked all parties to calm down, reduce escalation and restore calm to Syria, and I think This is an important message as what Syria really needs is not escalation but peace and a political process.

Pedersen said that he discussed with Minister Al-Miqdad the situation of the missing and detainees, pointing out that "there are several issues related to Syria that we need to reach a solution regarding."

He made it clear that his proposal was discussed "step by step," stressing that there is a need for further consultation on this matter, and this discussion is continuing with all parties.
