A man threw petrol bombs attached to firecrackers on Sunday at a migrant center in the southern English port city of Dover and then committed suicide.

Reuters news agency quoted its photographer, who was present at the scene at the time of the accident, as saying that the attacker, a white man wearing a striped shirt, arrived at the center in a white sports car, then got out and threw 3 incendiary bombs, none of which ignited.

And she added that after the attack, the man drove the car to a nearby gas station, wrapped a rope attached to a metal pole around his neck and drove off, killing himself.

"Officers have confirmed that between two and three Molotov cocktails have been thrown into the Home Office Immigration Building. One person has been reported with minor injuries and the suspect has been identified and located. Investigations are ongoing," Kent Police said in a statement.

A video clip posted by a journalist on social media showed workers at the center putting out a small fire at the outer wall of the building.

The attack comes amid a highly charged political debate over immigration in Britain, where the number of people trying to cross the Channel to enter Britain has increased dramatically.

The British government also faces criticism from some quarters for poor border controls, while charities and human rights groups say asylum seekers are treated inhumanely.
