The Epinal public prosecutor announced that two detainees killed themselves within ten days of each other in the city's remand center. The two men were aged 23 and 38. In 2022, 125 incarcerated people died by suicide in France, according to the International Prison Observatory. 

Two inmates at the Epinal remand center killed themselves around ten days apart, we learned on Friday from the city's public prosecutor, confirming information from Vosges Matin.

125 prisoners died by suicide in France in 2022

A 38-year-old inmate killed himself on Wednesday at the remand center. He “served several prison sentences for acts of aggravated violence,” said prosecutor Frédéric Nahon. Another inmate, aged 23, was also found hanging at the Epinal remand center on February 3.

Transported to hospital, he died there the next day. According to the International Prison Observatory (OIP), 239 people were housed on January 1 in this men's remand center which has 253 places. In 2022, 125 incarcerated people died by suicide in France, according to the OIP.
