A pedestrian suspension bridge over a river in Morbi, western Gujarat, collapsed on Wednesday, according to major Indian media.

Local officials say at least 32 people have been confirmed dead so far after people on the bridge fell into the river.

Footage from the site shows people swimming in the river and clinging to parts of the bridge.

Regarding the collapsed suspension bridge, multiple local media reported that repair work was completed only a few days ago, and that the number of casualties may increase due to the large number of people crossing at the time of the accident.

In the aftermath of the accident, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a post on his Twitter account that he was fully committed to his rescue efforts and would like to help his family and the injured.
