The number of people of determination beneficiaries of the services of the Ministry of Community Development increased during the current year by about 11%, compared to the same period last year, according to the latest electronic statistics issued by the ministry.
The ministry’s data, a copy of which was reviewed by Emirates Today, stated that the number of People of Determination cards issued this year exceeded 30,500 cards, compared to 27,623 cards that had been issued until the end of August of 2021.
The People of Determination Card is considered an official document indicating that its holder is a People of Determination, which guarantees him the rights and services stipulated in the Federal Law of Persons with Disabilities No. 29 of 2006, and the regulations and decisions issued in implementation thereof.
The ministry's data show that the total number of requests submitted to the ministry during the past years to obtain the card of people of determination, has reached 47,618 requests this year.
The UAE government launched the National Policy to Empower People of Determination, with the aim of empowering them and achieving effective participation and equal opportunities in an inclusive society that guarantees a decent life for them and their families.
The policy is based on a number of axes that cover various aspects and needs of people of determination.
The health and rehabilitation axis includes the provision of comprehensive health care, and a set of medical examinations in the pre, during and after birth stages to prevent disability, in addition to developing research and studies of disabilities, genetic syndromes, and rare diseases that cause disability, and launching a national program for early detection.
Citizens of people of determination benefit from a number of benefits related to access to housing, a range of health services, as well as financial aid for education, as well as free rehabilitation and treatment services in government care and rehabilitation centers for people of determination.
It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Community Development encourages families of people of determination to apply for the card, as it is a tool for monitoring the numbers and categories of disabilities, according to age groups, which helps the specialized authorities in the process of identifying needs and understanding the gaps in the field of support and treatment of people of determination.
Conditions for obtaining a People of Determination Card
The Ministry of Community Development has set four conditions for obtaining the People of Determination Card:
■ To be a citizen or legal resident of the country.
■ To be diagnosed by an approved official medical or psychological authority.
■ The presence of medical or psychological reports proving the existence of a disability, in terms of its type and severity.
■ The applicant must be a person of determination from the categories of mental, audio, visual, physical, autism or multiple disabilities.
