On July 21, a case of unvaccinated paralytic polio was identified in Rockland County.

The virus was identified as a vaccine-derived polio virus and was last recorded in New York in 1990.

"A disaster has occurred in the State of New York that local authorities cannot adequately deal with, and I hereby declare a statewide state of emergency until October 9, 2022," the document reads.

In June, the UK Public Health Agency declared a national emergency following the discovery of traces of the polio virus in the sewers of London.
