• Obituary Queen Elizabeth II of England dies

King Felipe VI has sent his condolences to the British royal family after the death of Elizabeth II.

In a telegram sent to Carlos, who is already treated as

"majesty"

, he says he is

"deeply saddened

by the news of the death of his majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, your dear mother".

"I would like to convey to His Majesty and the British people on my behalf, that of the Government and the Spaniards, our

deepest condolences

," continues the statement from Don Felipe, who is in Seville, where he is presiding over the commemorative events of the fifth centenary of around the world of Magellan and Elcano.

"Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth has been an undoubted witness, writer and member of the

most important chapters in the history

of our world during the last seven decades. Her sense of duty, commitment and a lifetime dedicated to serving the English is an example for all of us and will remain

a solid legacy

for future generations", continues the King, about his beloved aunt Lilibet.

"Queen Letizia and I send Her Majesty and the whole family

our love and prayers

. You are all in our hearts and thoughts. We will miss her very much. With my friendship and affection, Felipe.

A close relationship

The relationship between the British and Spanish royal houses has always been one of affection.

There are many

anecdotes

and moments shared by the Bourbons and the Windsors that show that they treat each other like family.

For example, when King Juan Carlos as a child

refused to learn English,

his father sat him next to Elizabeth II at a dinner, so that he could see how necessary it was to master that language.

The relationship is so close that for several summers Felipe VI's father invited Charles of England and Lady Di to spend a few

days off at Marivent.

And when Prince Philip of Edinburgh died, the King and Queen of Spain sent their condolences in a telegram to "Aunt Lilibet", one more example of royal fraternity.

However, this well-established relationship has been tarnished on numerous occasions

for political reasons.

And there is no other than a geographical one: the sovereignty of Gibraltar.

The visits that different members of the Windsor family have made to the rock have always had consequences on the agenda of the Spanish royal family.

The Earls of Wessex were the last to visit the territory last June, within the framework of the events to celebrate the jubilee of the recently deceased Elizabeth II.

Her visit coincided with Doña Letizia's visit to England to open an exhibition with Prince Charles.

The Queen's visit was not cancelled, as it was a decade earlier, when Doña Sofía

was unable to participate in the celebrations

for the 60th anniversary of Elizabeth II's enthronement for political reasons.

Don Juan Carlos's wife stayed ashore after Prince Eduardo was sent to the Rock.

Because although Don Felipe has been honored with the

Order of the Garter

and the King and Queen have made a state trip to the United Kingdom, where they stayed in Buckingham as a sign of good family relations, Gibraltar has always been present.

Thus, Don Juan Carlos and Doña Sofía missed the wedding of Prince Carlos and Lady Di because they decided to start their honeymoon in this territory.
