The Friday spectacle around the weekly market on Friedberger Platz not only causes trouble in the neighborhood in terms of noise late in the evening, it also often leaves a lot of rubbish behind.

The Clean Frankfurt staff department is fighting a silent but clearly visible battle: 100 waste containers, each of which can hold 120 liters, were set up on the dried-up green space on Friday, a spokeswoman said.

Pizza boxes, beverage packages and serviettes should end up in the bins instead of on the floor.

On the still deserted square in the morning, the arrangement of the gray containers, the temporarily set up toilets and urinals does not look very inviting at first.

But experience has shown that this ambience does not prevent the revelers from filling the space in between by the hundreds and staying there until late in the evening.

Because after the recent change of strategy by the administration, the city cleaning service is not sent through the crowd at 10 p.m. to clean up and put an end to the coziness, but only arrives the next morning.

The pressure on the adjoining squares in the district in the late evening has also eased somewhat, Annette Rinn (FDP), head of the regulatory department, reported recently.

The number of bins set up every Friday for the past eight years has varied and steadily increased.

The administrative department has to include many factors in its planning, such as whether rainy weather has been announced or whether an alternative such as the Museum Embankment Festival might lure the revelers to other places.

The waste experts are also interested in what kind of waste is left behind.

This time, therefore, six containers will only be set up for deposit-free glass bottles, because they have had to be collected more and more by the city cleaning department in recent weeks.

On the other hand, if you have a returnable bottle with you that you don’t want to take home with you, you can put it on a separate shelf so that it can go into the intended recycling loop.

According to information from the administrative department, the utilization of the waste containers has recently been very good: 30 percent were full, 35 percent were up to half full.

The bins are then picked up on Saturday morning with the early cleaning of the site.

This approach has already reduced surface pollution, as the spokeswoman said.
