Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed in a CIA-led drone attack, US officials told Reuters on Monday (August 1st), in the biggest setback to the Islamist group since the death of its founder, Osama bin Laden, in a US operation in 2011.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, one of the representatives said the fatal strike in Ayman al-Zawahiri was carried out in the Afghan capital Kabul on Sunday.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed in a statement that a strike had taken place, denouncing it as a violation of "international principles".

US President Joe Biden is due to speak at 7:30 a.m. US time (2330 GMT) on Monday on what the White House has described as "a successful counterterrorism operation".
